Getting starting with worms and blogs!

Welcome to Squared Away Acres and my blog, Worm Waste Works.  My name is Janelle and I am a farmer in Lawrence, Kansas.  I am passionate about gardening, compost worms, healing the soil and growing healthier food for myself and my family.  I want to share my experience, ideas and things I learn along the way with you, including funny video of my animals.

On my farm we raise a variety of animals including Idaho Pasture Pigs, bees, chickens, and compost worms.  Each of these animals plays an important roll in reducing waste and serving my community.

I am proud that the last the two years, I collected pumpkins after Halloween.  Last year alone, I picked up over 900 pounds of pumpkins that were destined for the last fill.  I made use of them by feeding the good ones to my pigs, the not-so-good ones fed my worms or went into the regular compost bin.

Through my experience, I have learned many small but impactful steps we can take to reduce food waste in our community, composting food scraps and yard waste, feeding food waste to animals, donating excess food to local food banks, learning how to use imperfect produce in recipes, and preserving fruits and veg through canning or freezing

In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to sharing more stories and ideas with you.  Together we can make an impact on our food waste and help everyone learn more about sustainability.  Thank you for joining me on this journey!
